Joe Henderson - The Milestone Years (1994) - (8CD Boxset)

Joe Henderson – The Milestone Years (1994) – (8CD Boxset)
Genre: Jazz Saxophone | Label: Milestone | 8CD | MP3 320 kbps | 1.32 GB

This eight-CD package covers the period between 1967 and 1976, when the tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson was under contract with Milestone Records. Henderson made a dozen albums under his own name during this period and appeared in several sessions as a sideman. The 84 tracks drawn from the period offer an exhaustive account of activities of Henderson. The compilation starts with the full sextet session that made up the kicker, then goes on to cover the quartet version pared down the same band that cut tetragon. Quintet and quartet sides with Herbie Hancock from Power to the People below. Living material of a sextet with Woody Shaw on trumpet, recorded at the Lighthouse, includes some new material. "Canyon Lady," "Elements," "Black Narcissus" and "Black Miracle" full bands Henderson, but he also appears as a sideman with material from The Lee Konitz Duets, Nat Adderley, The Scavenger, and several sessions Flora Purim. -John Swenson

Recordings most famous tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson are the first Blue Notes and his latest Verve, but between he recorded exclusively for Milestone and, although Henderson was in consistently well in various settings, it was somewhat neglected during his middle years. This massive set of eight CD contains all the songs in Henderson Milestone dozen LPs, plus a duet with altoist Lee Konitz and his appearances with the singer Flora Purim and cornetist Nat Adderley. The music tracks from the Blue Note-style hard bop and modal explorations to fusion and ’70s funk, with important contributions made by trumpeter Mike Lawrence, Woody Shaw and Luis Gasca, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, and keyboardists Kenny Barron, Don Friedman, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, George Cables, Alice Coltrane, Mark Levine, and George Duke, among others. Not all songs are classics (some of the later sets are unabashedly commercial), but none of the 82 selections are dull and very distinct Henderson always gives his best. It is highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
