My role at Microsoft requires me to show Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Exchange and Lync to customers throughout the North Central United States. To demonstrate a variety of products that I run Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V on my laptop and use multiple virtual machine environments. I also use the same laptop to my normal work day including the daily use of Outlook, Word, Excel, web browsing and watching streaming media. Since I’m doing more than just running a server I want a desktop experience to be very similar to Windows 7. The good news is that Windows Server 2008 R2 is built on the Windows 7 code base, so with a little tweaking you can get the full desktop experience.
Http://www.win2008r2workstation.com/ The site covers the main steps in the configuration of Windows Server 2008 R2 to look and feel very similar to Windows 7.
A key tweak that you do not want to miss is the value SystemResponsiveness modifying the registry. This key determines the percentage of CPU resources that should be available to low-priority tasks. By default in Windows Server 2008 R2 is set to 100%. Leaving the value at 100% may cause the playback of video and audio to stutter if you try to do anything else at the same time. Windows 7 is the default value defined as 20%.
To change this setting you must open a registry editor using the "Run as administrator" option. Go to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Multimedia SystemProfile \
and modify the value of SystemResponsiveness be either 14 hex or 20 decimal. This sets up windows to ensure 20% of resources for low-priority tasks, freeing resources for higher priority tasks such as audio and video.
After making the change you have to restart your computer. Note: Use Registry Editor incorrectly can cause major damage to your Windows installation. Do not change this unless you are very comfortable working with the Windows Registry.
